Let's Talk about PURPOSE!

Updated: Jan 25, 2020

How do you define PURPOSE? Is it instilled at birth? Is it something that has happened to you that inspires it? Maybe purpose is a general assignment that we are given, to add value to the world. Take a second to really ask yourself, how do you define purpose? At this very moment, do you believe you know yours? If you’re anything like me, you know it as the point where passions, values, and God given talents align. However, by definition, it is the reason for which something is done or created; or the reason for which something exists. What I find to be so interesting, is no matter how you define it, it is still a question that most will struggle with at some point in their life.

I have a secret, Ready? “It’s okay to not know your purpose!” There is no passing or failing grade applied for knowing, or not knowing the answer to the purpose question. I was intrigued by the amount of pressure we place on ourselves and others to know the answer. Could it be that we also have more than one purpose in our lifetimes? In my journey of coming to terms with my purpose, I have found that my perspective was the most important, regardless of what I felt my purpose was at any given time. Whether you’re a business woman, who feels her purpose is to break the corporate glass ceiling of a particular industry, a singer whose purpose is to minister through song, or a stay at home mom who believes her sole purpose in life is to protect and provide for her children; the point where you accept your purpose can change and grow as you do, is where you’ll find joy.

When asking the question of purpose consider this:

  • What is something that comes naturally to me?

  • Ask those close to you, what do you tend to talk about most?

  • What excites you?

  • What cultural, political, or social issues are you most passionate about?

  • Where do you go for inspiration?

Asking yourself questions like these can assist you in coming to terms with where your purpose may be. Spend some time journaling, it can help you see your strides and patterns as you begin to understand your purpose.

A woman’s desire to align with her purpose, in spite of knowing exactly what that may be, is such a beautiful quality for any woman to have. The reward isn’t necessarily knowing your purpose, rather the will to work diligently and earnestly towards it. A woman of purpose, to me, is a woman who dares to dream, create, and inspire herself and the world.

What I want you to take from this is that purpose is like a hidden treasure with many compartments. Just when you think you’ve figured it out, God adds on more. Be empowered by God’s grace knowing that your purpose as a woman is not a one-sided situation. You’re capable of more than one set purpose, and that you’re truly valuable. As you experience life, your purpose will find you and bless you with insight, inspiration, and give direction.

Let’s not end here. Do you have questions or comments that you feel would add value to this topic? Please share. I’d love to hear from you!
